AstraZeneca’s recent decision to stop patenting a cholesterol-lowering drug to treat high cholesterol could lead to the eventual launch of a generic version of the drug in the United States.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Friday that it would stop generic versions of the cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor, which is used to treat high cholesterol, for a period of six months. The FDA said the decision could also lead to the launch of a generic version of Lipitor, a cholesterol-reducing drug that is marketed as Lipitor but in the United States.
In an official statement, AstraZeneca said: “We have decided to not pursue generic competition as we believe this decision will cause increased competition to the patent and liability of our U. S. patent litigation.”
The FDA had previously stated that Crestor will likely face generic competition for six months or until its patent expires in 2023, but that the generic would be able to launch in the US without a generic competitor’s approval.
The FDA also said it expected the patent for Crestor to be sold by December 2022, but only after the FDA has completed its analysis.
In a statement, Crestor’s brand name was also listed as a “target” to “promote cardiovascular health.”
The company said it would update its stock price as Crestor gets closer to the expiration date of its patent. It had previously said that the price would be “up by $6.15 in 2023.”
The FDA will continue to monitor its own data and will “assess the market position and pricing trends in the U. S.”
The company will also be required to update the company’s website to include the full list of Crestor generics.
In response to AstraZeneca’s announcement, it added that the company has received FDA approval to market the drug to the United States market.
The company said it was disappointed by the FDA’s decision to stop the generic version, but the company was confident that the FDA would approve a generic version for the rest of the decade.
The company said it would seek FDA approval to launch generic Crestor in the US within the next few years.

Originally published: December 23, 2022 at 12:00 AM PST“There are multiple reasons we may not be able to launch our generic version of Lipitor in the US,” said Michael L. LeBel, executive vice president, strategy and chief executive officer of AstraZeneca.
“While a generic would allow us to focus on our existing portfolio, it may not be appropriate for the current patent system to allow the launch of a new drug in the US.“If the FDA approves the generic, we can then focus on our current portfolio and address the next patent challenge.”
The company said it was satisfied with the decision.“This decision has made our vision clear: we believe that generic competition will not lead to increased competition,” said Andrew C. LeBel, executive vice president and chief executive officer.
In a statement, LeBel said: “AstraZeneca has been an early adopter of the new cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor, and we are committed to making this the best time for Crestor’s future.”
The company will “continually evaluate” the regulatory process and “continue to take necessary steps to ensure Crestor’s efficacy in the US market,” it said.“We are committed to the development and commercialization of generic,” LeBel added.
AstraZeneca declined to release its full financial details.
AstraZeneca is seeking U. approval for a generic version of Crestor to compete with Crestor in the US market, but only after the FDA approves the generic.
The company noted that the FDA does not approve the generic for competition with Crestor, but the agency will decide whether to pursue generic competition for the next six months or until the patent expires.
“As a result of this decision, AstraZeneca is committed to meeting our obligations under the new patent system to ensure that we continue to maximize the benefits of our product,” said John M.

I have been taking this medicine for 2 years and have been very satisfied with the results I achieved. However, recently I was prescribed Crestor because of my cholesterol level. I have read that it is better to take it at the lowest dose for as short a time as possible, but I'm concerned because I have also gained a lot of weight. I am very anxious about the next step, and the next day I have to take another medicine. The last time I took this medicine was in September 2023 and I was diagnosed with my lipasec. I am taking it for 3 months now, and after that I have lost about 15 pounds. I am not sure if this is due to Crestor or the other statins that have been prescribed.
